Wailuku is a little town at the base of the Iao Valley. There is so much cramped into this delightful town, including two hostels within throwing distance from each other, a vaporizer room, a Safeway and two very old delightful churches. Across the parking lot from the hostel I prefer, called Northshore Hostel, is a four story building that simply has the words FOOD COURT. Inside that building is a large eatery. The only food that has been active while we have been there is Indian food. That Indian food is delicious. You can get a bowl of rice, chicken curry and cabbage salad on top for $6. And it's almost too much to eat.
Tonight, it was the location of the MAUI HOMEBREWERS ASSOCIATION Tuesday night meeting. The leader of the pack seemed to be Thor, who wore a Fat Tire shirt. There was also Will, Steve and Anthony, who all seemed to be close friends. To my right was a man who had a hundred questions. I didn't catch his name but he worked for Wailea Marroitt as the head groundskeeper. To Curt's left, was Dan, who was a delightful man that lives near us in Haiku. Dan invited us to come to his house and drink out oft he six home made beers he has on tap. Curtis and I both agree that we like Dan.
We tried many beers. A lot of the guys there tonight brew IPA. We tried a double IPA, a brown beer, a English made America Pale Ale, and a Russian Imperial Stout. Delicious.
Curtis is inspired to brew beer with his new friends and regrets that he does not have beer going now that he can enter in the beer tasting competition that is within the next month.
I am happy that he has found a niche.
Now all we need is to find a knitter that I can buddy up with.
More a Maui to come....

Stock Car Races
Located off the highway between Kihei and Kahalui, this site used to be the old airstrip. Now they offer stock car racing, motocross, drag races and other auto delights.
Saturday night we went to the stock car races, paying only $12 per person. We each had a gourmet hotdog from SUMO DOGS. Curtis had a maui onion dog and I had a mango dog. Both were good. I was hoping to buy beer at the races but apparently it's BYOB.
When we got there, we chose to sit with some nice enough looking people. I was intimidated but Curtis walked right over to them and introduced himself. We talked for a while. Turns out that the folks Curtis met are the leading racers on the track. They were fast. Their family owned company KIHEI CAR RENTAL sponsored many cars on the track.
There were many differ kinds of cars racing. Trans Ams, Camero, lifted trucks, and sprint cars. The sprint cars were so fucking fast!! One of the sprint cars was so fast that it was not only the fastest car on the track, but it was the fastest car EVER in the history of that track. It was the fastest qualifying time ever and the fastest win ever in all races it was in. It was unbelievable.
And the wrecks. Oh the wrecks. My my my. One race ended because there was only one car left, out of six. Another race ended with two cars in it out of six. One wreck flipped the car three full times. Another wreck had the driver slammed by a big car. One of the sprint cars wrecked, flipping one full spiral rotation.
Next weekend they're having Drag Races. I want to go but we'll see if that's what we'll do.

Little Beach Sunday
Every Sunday evening you can find tons of people crowding Little Beach. After you park you car on the street, You can follow the signs for Big Beach, walk across the beach and up the trail at the end of the beach, or you can follow the horde headed that way. All types of people gather together to celebrate ALOHA. Everyone does it their way: dancing, swimming in the ocean, spear hunting, smoking pot, eating mushrooms, or getting naked. There was a young boy walking around with blue paint on his hands, and if you tell him where he'll put a hand print on you. Curtis got one on his face and I got one just below my throat on my chest. The beach is always packed.
We made friends with a few people while we were there. One guy was spear fishing. Another guy was the father of the young painter. Turns out that little guy was spitting fire later. Another guy was just getting ready to move to Switzerland for school.
There were people tossing off their clothes and jumping in the ocean.
The real action, though, started as the sun began to sink below the horizon. When that sun left, the crowd went wild. Not like the saying. They really went wild. Hooting and hollering, pulling off clothes, and the people doing light shows all began lighting their objects on fire. Swords, nunchucks, and preparing bottles containing alcohol for fire breathing. It was quite a spectacle.
While we were all mesmerized, a man away from the crowd lit a propane fueled tube on fire, causing a huge fire ball. I could feel the heat from across the beach.
We made friends with the spear hunter, Joe, and the Switzerland student, Jordan, who were camping on the beach, drinking Fireball and waiting for their fire to get warm enough to cook the bright orange fish that Joe had caught. We joked and laughed and enjoyed their company.
Curtis and I stayed until the night began to turn into the wee hours of morning.
On the walk back up the trail, we noticed many cockroaches. We are fortunate enough to have only come across two in the house we live in. That so far has been the worst thing about this island.

Sonora Folks
No matter where you go you will always know if you are with Sonora folks.
Sonora folks treat people like they are family.
Today we shared company with our friend Bryan, who is from Sonora.
Many different things came up:
Skater Eric
Tattoo Eric
Tattoo shop in Jamestown, California
Kari and Justin
420 apartments
Drinking a lot of beer
Bree (her fiancé Erik) and Aretha
Moaning Caverns
Mercer caverns
Tourists
Columbia college
Smoking pot
High school
Going away party
Moving to Maui
Our dog Emma
Other Sonora area folks that are on the island
I am present to right now that we are not alone. We will never be alone.
We got home to Phil, who we rent from, smiling and sharing our day.
Life is good.
I am GRATEFUL
More Maui to come.

Beachster
Easter Sunday- Beachster
We spent Easter at the beach with our friend Erik's family. Erik messaged us and said that since we were here alone don't know anyone, we should go be with his sisters and mother and other family and friends.
I was nervous at first but they were indeed like family. Everyone was so wonderful and great to be with. We swam in the ocean and even played toss with a football. They taught me how to dive under the water and listen to the whales squeal. We watched sea turtles swim by and tried to float waves and still keep our beers above the wakes.
My body has been sore every day from working out in the morning. On Beachster Sunday, my body was especially sore, especially my hip. In the early part of the morning, Curtis helped me from my chair. Towards the afternoon I was beginning to loosen up.
I met a woman named Jackie who was really fun to hang out with. I shared with her that I would love to work in a clothing store. She manages one and I interviewed with her the next day. I don't know if I have the job but I have no doubt that I will be employed within the next week.
Only thing is:
I DIDNT PUT ON SUNBLOCK. I did not put on sunblock and paid dearly for it.
The burning was horrible. My poor breasts were so burnt. My shoulders felt like they were swollen and they hurt so badly. I felt like I was on fire.
Curtis put aloe on me often and it was painful.
It is better now. I am awake to the pain of the sun. I love it and I will remember that like the food I eat, too much of anything is not good.
We are getting me UV SKINZ clothing to get me through this.
I love my island and am grateful to be living in paradise.
More Maui to come!!!
Aloha!

Maui Margaret
My name is Margaret. I have just moved to Maui, Hawaii.
I am 31 and married to Curtis. Curtis is my best friend. We have been dating for over half my life now and in October we will be celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary.
We both grew up in Sonora, California and we have spent the past two years working for Landmark in San Francisco, California.
We visited Maui in 2008 and promised each other we would live here someday. 2008 was a difficult year for both our families and Hawaii fell back into our minds. We went through many changes together, including our wedding on 10-10-10.
In spring of 2011, Curtis had one more class at Columbia College. The college didn't have enough students registered to provide the course. This went on every semester until 2013. In April of this year, Curtis and I began working for Landmark in San Francisco and we moved to the Bay Area, with the support of my sister Lisa and her husband Joshua.
Although our jobs were wonderful, we wanted to be in Maui. So we decided to see now much money we could save together. We saved a thousand dollars in two weeks. We both submitted our resignations at our jobs in September, effective the following March of 2015. We bought our one way airline tickets to Maui before Halloween.
Over the next six months, we tended to the following:
1. Save $10,000
2. Sell anything worth anything
3. Donate excess items to charity
4. Complete living in California, including saying goodbye to our work family, parents and siblings. We also threw two parties to provide people with opportunities to say goodbye to us, one in the Bay Area and one in Sonora.
On March 18, we had moved our things out of the room we rented in Pittsburg and were managing last minute details.
On March 24, we stay stayed the night at my friend Shanna's house. We received a text that my Suzuki Samurai was ready to be picked up in Kahului, HI.
ON March 25, Shanna drove us to the airport and we flew to our new home. When we landed, we caught a cab to the port of Kahului to pick up our car. We drove to the hotel, dropped off our things and went to the beach. I thought "I am tired and the water is too cold." But I went anyway and got in. The water was perfect. Everything was perfect.
Over the next few days, we swam everyday at Big Beach on Makena Beach. We swam with turtles. At the end of each day, we would drive to Life's A Beach, a local bar, to have a Mai Tai. Eventually Curtis would perfect his Mai Tai and we would make them at home. We spent every day looking for a new home.
On Tuesday March 31, we met Phil McGain, a local Ironman and kite boarder/maker. He had a room for rent in his home. When we wet to his house to meet him, we were blown away by the location and the atmosphere. We are happily renting from him now. We both recommend him as a place to stay on your visit to Maui through AirBNB. He's a gracious host and provides comfort and clean environment.
More Maui to come.
Aloha.

Aloha.
